Abstract
Le 3 juillet 1608, Champlain a nommé le lieu de son débarquement : « Québec, ainsi appelé des Sauvages » écrivait-il. En langues algonquiennes, le toponyme désigne le détroit du fleuve. La pointe de Québec s’avançait dans le fleuve, émergeant de vastes battures exceptionnellement propices à la vie animale. Québec était localisé en territoire des Montagnais (ou Innu) et ceux-ci ont gardé la mémoire de l’arrivée des «chercheurs de terres» qui leur ont promis de la farine. Des combats auraient suivi et les Montagnais se seraient repliés. Nous tentons d’établir des correspondances entre la tradition orale et l’histoire. La « fondation » s’inscrivait dans la prolongation d’un traité d’alliance de 1603 conclu près de Tadoussac. Les Français ont choisi ce site pour échapper au monopole montagnais sur la traite à Tadoussac et imposer le leur. En conséquences, les relations franco-montagnaises ne furent pas toujours harmonieuses et par delà de nombreux échanges, les Montagnais ont tenté d’échapper au contrôle des Français.
