Searching for the Militarization of Canadian Culture: The Rise of a Military-Cultural Memory Network

Abstract
During the past twenty years, there has been a shift in Canadian culture from representations that highlight a peacekeeping view of the military and its past to a hardened and more pervasive image. This paper explores the militarization of culture by outlining a theory and method to study the emergence of a militarycultural memory network. Specifically, I reassess the debate over The Valour and the Horror as a formative event in this network. I propose that the Dominion Institute has since emerged as an intermediary connecting various interested groups who use popular media forms to canonize and archive military history.
