Abstract
La littérature relative au développement durable (DD) consacre une grande part de son attention à la manière dont l’économie de marché doit être réformée afin de sauvegarder l’environnement terrestre. Les concepts d’éthique des affaires et de responsabilité sociale de l’entreprise font notamment écho à pareille préoccupation. Or, l’histoire de l’industrie européenne suggère qu’au dix-neuvième siècle, le recyclage des déchets était une pratique courante, spontanément intégrée au système d’incitations de l’économie de marché. De cet exemple, il est loisible d’inférer le questionnement suivant, à rebours du discours dominant : et si c’était en laissant les lois du marché opérer l’allocation des ressources que l’intégration économie-écologie avait le plus de chances d’être harmonieusement réalisée ?
