Abstract
소수집단의 급속한 성장은 그들을 기존 주류사회로의 통합시키는 것에 대한 관심사를 제기한다. 통합을 개념화하고 측정하는 데는 다양한 방법이 존재하지만, 이 연구는 공간적 통합(spatial integration)에 초점을 맞춘다. 다문화사회의 통합 논의에 대해 비교적 오랜 역사를 가지고 있는 캐나다에 거주하는 소수인종집단들의 정주 경향의 시간적 변화에 대한 분석을 기반으로 이민자들이 3대 대도시(Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver)를 벗어나 다른 도시로의 공간적 확산되면서 기존 주류사회 속으로의 동화되어 가는 경향을 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. 연구대상으로는 캐나다의 소수인종 가운데서 가장 큰 인종집단을 이루는 중국계(Chinese)와 남아시아(South Asian) 인종들의 거주유형을 1991년 센서스부터 2006년 센서스 자료를 통해 분석하며, 분석단위는 캐나다 통계청(Statistics Canada)에 의해 분류되는 대도시(Census Metropolitan Areas, CMAs) 가운데서 2006년 현재 전체인구의 1% 이상 되는 인구를 가진 15개의 CMAs를 대상으로 한다. 시계열자료의 분석결과 주로 3대 대도시에 집중하던 집단거주지역이 점차 인구가 상대적으로 적은 다른 CMAs로 확산되는 것을 볼 수 있다. 이들 집중과 분산의 이론적 요인으로는 초기 이민 당시의 사회경제적 요인, 이민자의 환경 적응 능력, 노동시장의 접근성, 분산의 자발적 요인, 정착지원 및 다문화정책과 같은 정부정책 등을 들 수 있다.
