Abstract
Plutôt que d’accéder à l’écriture intimiste par des genres (roman, journal intime, etc.) souvent jugés futiles ou suspects à l’époque, plusieurs écrivains québécois du XIXe siècle ont opté pour d’autres voies. Profitant de la bonne réputation du récit de voyage et de l’absence de règles et de contraintes précises qui le caractérise, ils en ont fait un lieu d’incubation et d’expérimentation de l’expression intimiste. Appel à la rêverie, aux souvenirs et aux impressions personnelles, les récits de voyage de François-Xavier Garneau, de Faucher de Saint-Maurice et d’Arthur Buies, en particulier, visent tout autant à décrire les lieux visités qu’à transmettre une expérience personnelle et intimiste.
