Abstract
L’examen des données par génération illustre bien l’hétérogénéité des habitudes tabagiques passées de même que la convergence présente entre sociétés et entre hommes et femmes. Les hommes québécois se sont distingués par des taux élevés de tabagisme et de cancer du poumon et les femmes françaises, par des taux très faibles. Ces différences disparaissent avec les générations nées dans les années 50 et 60. Un rapprochement accru de la mortalité totale des hommes et des femmes est prévisible, du moins pour les causes de décès reliées au tabac. Mais celle-ci se manifestera, sexes réunis, différemment. Ainsi, peu de changements dans la mortalité par cancer du poumon sont à prévoir au Québec, bien qu’une baisse soit possible ; par contre, une hausse est probable en France où le cancer du poumon devrait devenir, comme c’est déjà le cas au Québec, la principale cause de mortalité par cancer de la femme.
