La Grande-Bretagne dispose, au milieu du xviiie siècle, d’un imposant empire colonial, surtout depuis le traité de 1763, mais l’indépendance des treize colonies reconnue par l’Angleterre au Traité de Versailles en 1783 interrompra définitivement la présence coloniale britannique sur ce vaste continent peuplé d’environ 4 millions d’habitants à cette date-là.
