Cet article traite d’une question vive sur les rapports entre l’enseignement et l’apprentissage des mathématiques dans le contexte de l’adaptation scolaire : la didactique des mathématiques peut-elle être spécifique de ce domaine ? La question est ici étudiée en trois temps. Dans un premier temps, une revue critique de travaux sur la notion de difficultés d’apprentissage en mathématiques est réalisée. Elle permet de faire émerger des hypothèses concurrentes sur les difficultés d’apprentissage et de dégager une problématique qui oscille entre deux perspectives : celle du primat des publics et celle du primat de la culture mathématique. Dans un deuxième temps, la présentation d’un cas clinique illustre un certain nombre de questions et défis de nature didactique que pose la mise en œuvre de conditions didactiques prévues pour l’enseignement ordinaire dans l’enseignement auprès d’élèves en difficultés scolaires. Au troisième temps de l’article, des repères didactiques pour l’étude des rapports entre enseignement et apprentissage des mathématiques dans le contexte des difficultés scolaires sont formulés de même que des balises visant à leur opérationnalisation.
