En s'appuyant sur l'étude empirique d'un quartier populaire de grands ensembles, cet article décrit le rapport des jeunes garçons à leur cité dans la mesure où le territoire constitue une dimension essentielle de leur identité. Il souligne d'abord l'existence d'un rapport positif au quartier, montrant que ce dernier ne se réduit pas aux seuls facteurs de l'exclusion. Fortement attachés à leur cité, les jeunes y élaborent une sociabilité qui paraît si dense qu'elle offre le contrepoint à la vision anomique de la banlieue. Ils créent des espaces solidaires et sont les principaux acteurs de la vie collective. L'article montre ensuite que le quartier demeure cependant pour les jeunes un point d'ancrage ambigu, tout à la fois objet de protection et de mobilisation, mais aussi lieu d'un mécanisme d'enfermement. Le rapport au quartier est dominé par cette contradiction.
