Abstract
S’il peut sembler paradoxal de parler de manifeste aujourd’hui, dans un contexte d’éclatement des pratiques artistiques et de disparition des mouvements, l’on observe pourtant un retour aux manifestes à la fin du XXe siècle, à l’époque de la « crise de l’art contemporain ». À titre d’exemple, le critique d’art Nicolas Bourriaud publie, en 1995, le livre Esthétique relationnelle : l’ouvrage expose une nouvelle théorie, rassemblant a posteriori des oeuvres très diverses sur le plan des sujets abordés et des styles. Nous constaterons ici que l’entreprise de légitimation par un appui théorique rapproche, dans un premier temps, l’Esthétique relationnelle du manifeste avant-gardiste. Cependant, nous verrons par la suite que l’approche quasi sociologique de Bourriaud et sa revendication d’un héritage s’opposent au ton polémique et à la tabula rasa propres aux avant-gardes. Nous expliquerons ces différences majeures en nous appuyant sur le changement de contexte historique : à l’ère de la globalisation, les artistes contemporains élaborent de nouvelles formes d’engagement et d’utopies, très éloignées de celles de leurs aînés, modifiant, par là même, les modalités et les finalités du manifeste.
