A teoria de avaliação institucional vem sendo bastante estudada e sua acelerada vulgarização não tem sido acompanhada por análises críticas que captem seu significado. Regra geral é aceita e aplicada sem a apreensão e interpretação dos aspectos e valores difundidos, acabando por embasar políticas públicas de avaliação das instituições de educação superior no Brasil. O presente estudo é um esforço inicial de analisá-la criticamente; para tanto recorremos ao método da economia política, desenvolvido inicialmente por Karl Marx.
