Abstract
In Canada and other countries, veterinary licensure generally consists in 1) presentation of documentary evidence of having reached the requisite academic standard; 2) a written declaration, signed in the presence of a notary public, that the applicant has not been convicted of criminal or professional misconduct and will abide by the provincial veterinary legislation; and 3) payment of a fee. The applicant does not expressly promise to undertake any particular duties of care to animals. By contrast, in countries such as the UK and Ireland, the veterinarian must promise in person to the registrar who represents the public interest in animals that is enshrined in the veterinary profession to safeguard the welfare of animals entrusted to the registrant’s care (1,2).
