Abstract
La conscience ethnique apparaît sous deux modes politiques différents dans deux champs distincts du système mondial. Dans les zones périphériques elle combine les intérêts des travailleurs agricoles opprimés, et les cadres locaux qui souffrent de discrimination dans un appel " nationaliste " pour quelque forme d'autonomie d'une unité géographique déterminée. Dans les zones centrales, elle a des racines solides dans les éléments sous-prolétariens, et elie est souvent dirigée contre l'assimilation qui est prêchée par les institutions de centre-gauche. Le second mode politique tend à être idéologiquement plus radical que le premier. L'article soutient l'hypothèse que l'Asie centrale soviétique a, jusqu'à présent, manifesté ce premier mode de conscience ethnique. Cependant, vu la transformation industrielle de l'U.R.S.S. et la migration probable des habitants de l'Asie centrale vers la Russie européenne, il est possible que 1'U.R.S.S. fera face prochainement au second mode de conscience ethnique.
