Abstract
This paper is the second of a series describing the development of a new battery technology for use as an energy storage system in telecommunications applications. The lithium polymer battery (LPB) promises to be the next generation power source. This paper describes the LPB energy storage system, including battery module thermal management and monitoring and control devices. Lab cells in the range of 7 Ah capacity and prototype battery modules of 24 V and 80 Ah capacity were built and tested. Also discussed is the battery module design flexibility which allows for various battery string configurations.
