Abstract
Vichy a assigné à chaque sexe une place dans la société: les femmes devaient (re)devenir mères au foyer et s'occuper de leurs enfants, et les hommes subvenir aux besoins de leur famille. Mais la réalité sociale s'est toujours opposée, entre 1940 et 1944, au discours officiel fondé sur les valeurs du travail, de la famille et de la patrie, dans une imposture toujours grandissante. La politique familiale fut inspirée du Code de la famille né juste avant la guerre, sous la Troisième République. Cependant, les dispositions prises par Vichy avaient en commun de renforcer l'institution familiale plus que d'en protéger les individus. C'est le sens des très sévères mesures répressives contre les pratiques sociales mettant la famille en péril. En dépit d'une certaine continuité des structures familiales après la guerre, la philosophie familiale de Vichy divergeait radicalement de celle de la République puisqu'elle fondait une sorte de légitimité naturelle au conservatisme et à l'immobilisme social.
