Abstract
Este art?culo trata del trabajo antropol?gico de Jos? Mar?a Arguedas, y postula centralidad del mismo en el proyecto social y cultural del autor, algo que se puede olvidar al privilegiar a sus novelas. Arguedas comenz? su carrera cient?fica durante los a?os 50, cuando Estados Unidos emerge como poder global dominante. En las ciencias sociales nueva epistemolog?a que corresponde a esta situaci?n pol?tica es conocida por el nombre de de modernizaci?n. Casi todo el trabajo antropol?gico de Arguedas es un desaf?o al presupuesto de esta teor?a de que sociedad andina y se excluyen una a otra. Arguedas des establece el sentido de la modernidad y la tradici?n provocando el repensa miento de t?rminos que, por lo menos en su momento, obtienen el estado de sentido com?n. Por eso, en nuestro momento actual, cuando idea - e innegable presencia - de modernidades alternativas nos persuade con su posibilidad pol?tica, el trabajo de Arguedas es enormemente sugerente, si no prof?tico. In 1941, the same year that Ciro Alegr?a published his classic indigenista text, El mundo es ancho y ajeno, a new era opened in Andean literary production with the appearance of Yawar fiesta by Jos? Maria Arguedas. Arguedas struggled to achieve a literary style in Spanish that could adequately convey Quechua culture, a difficult proposition since he was vindicating an oral culture through writing - the very instrument frequently employed for the purpose of its subjugation. Though Arguedas was never entirely satisfied, Yawar fiesta is in some sense his first triumph. It is particularly poignant, therefore, that after the publication of this novel Arguedas remained silent (as a producer of literature that is) for seventeen years. Scholars, and Arguedas himself, have been puzzled by this silence. There is an understandable tendency to attribute it to his underlying psychological illness, an illness which eventually led the author to take his own life.
