A la luz de la teoría de Marc Bloch sobre la "plasticidad de la historia", el presente estudio propone que la Historia antigua de México, de Francisco Javier Clavijero, pretende ejercitar al lector en los cambios de guardia temporales y heredarle, junto a los avatares del mundo mexica, el hábito intelectual para sospechar formas distintas de construir cronologías. Clavijero anima la experiencia de la relatividad de la historia, lo cual es diagnosis posible de un mundo que premedita la lectura de su pasado y, por lo tanto, que mina el ingreso a todos sus periodos históricos, incluido el presente. En el establecimiento de todo ello radica la convicción de que, en efecto, el libro es anuncio nítido de los reclamos de autonomía que pronto habrán de conducir a las guerras de independencia en Hispanoamérica.
