Para la dicotomia publico/privado del pensamiento occidental, el poder se ejerce en el ambito publico mientras que el privado se mantiene como un espacio domestico, apolitico y no teorizado. Por el contrario, para las feministas este constituye un area de poder que debe ser estudiada. El objetivo del articulo es analizar la articulacion entre la esfera publica y la privada a partir de entrevistas a profundidad realizadas con 14 presidentas municipales de Tlaxcala, Mexico. Se examinan las distintas presiones a las que se ven sujetas las mujeres para asumir un cargo publico asi como sus escasas posibilidades de tener una carrera politica de largo alcance. Se concluye que las relaciones sociales del ambito privado son vitales para facilitar la participacion de las mujeres en el publico, por lo que es necesario incluirlas en la definicion de la democracia.
