Les auteurs comparent les descriptions des phéromones sexuelles des mâles de bourdons publiées avant et depuis 1996. Ils mettent en évidence une importante différence dans la quantité de molécules décrites entre ces études. Cette différence s’explique notamment par l’importante évolution dans l’informatisation des données et de leur analyse. Elle s’explique également par les objectifs des premières études, limitées alors à décrire et à démontrer la spécificité de ces phéromones. Les études menées depuis 1996 montrent que la majorité des molécules sécrétées sont présentes sous forme de traces. Néanmoins, ces molécules sont d’importance majeure pour toute étude entrant dans le concept moderne d’analyse phylogénétique globale («total evidence approach»). La redescription complète de ces phéromones pour les espèces étudiées avant 1996 apparaît donc indispensable.
