Au lendemain de la Première Guerre, Marcel Mauss entreprend la rédaction de son magnum opus sur « La nation », mais sur cette grande question, il ne publie qu’un texte, « The Problem of Nationality » (1920). Du grand ouvrage de Mauss, on ne connaît que les fragments que publie Henri Levi-Bruhl en 1956 dans la revue L’Année sociologique sous le titre « La nation ». L’objet de notre article est triple : 1) présenter l’ensemble du projet de Marcel Mauss sur « La nation » à partir d’une lecture du manuscrit ; 2) situer ce projet dans l’oeuvre et la vie du neveu d’Émile Durkheim pendant l’une des périodes les plus actives de sa vie professionnelle et militante ; et 3) expliquer le caractère inachevé de cet ouvrage en tenant compte du contexte des années 1930.
