Dans cet article, la mobilité quotidienne des enfants constitue un analyseur singulier du mode de vie des familles et en particulier celles ayant fait le choix de s’installer en banlieue, dans une ville nouvelle de la région parisienne. A partir de données quantitatives et qualitatives mettant en regard, dans deux contextes urbains (centre de Paris et banlieue parisienne), le discours des enfants et celui des parents, nous montrons l’incidence des logiques résidentielles et de la structure urbaine des quartiers sur les conditions d’autonomie de déplacements. En ville nouvelle, l’autonomie des enfants tend à se construire dans une logique de territoires inscrite dans un besoin de fixité, de sociabilité et de visibilité tandis qu’en centre-ville, c’est la logique de cheminement qui prévaut.
