Nutrition and Exercise Intervention Reduced Risk Factors for Diabetes Among Arab Canadian Muslim Women (ACMW)

Abstract
PURPOSE: to investigate the impact of lifestyle change on reducing modifiable risk factors for type 2 diabetes by promoting healthy nutrition and exercise for ACMW. METHODS: Sixty ACMW were randomly allocated to an intensive lifestyle intervention group (IG; N=30) or a control group (CG; N=30). The participants in the IG received dietary counseling and an exercise program consisting of endurance, flexibility and strength activities, held three times/week for 12 weeks in the London Muslim Mosque gym. All instructions were given in English and Arabic. Pre and post measures in both groups included completing a 3-day food intake record and pedometer to count steps for 7 days. Body mass, height, waist and hip circumferences, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose (FBG) and fitness level were also evaluated before and after the 12 weeks in both groups. RESULTS: Daily steps increased by 136 %, body weight was reduced by 6.5 kg and body mass index was reduced from 34.9± 5.2 to 32.4± 3.9 kg/m2, p<0.05, from baseline in the IG, with no change in the CG. In addition, waist to hip ratio was reduced (0.81±0.04) from baseline (0.86±0.4, p<0.05) and FBG was reduced (4.6±0.6 mmol/L vs 5.8±0.5 mmol/L; p<0.05), with no change in the CG. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure was significantly reduced and fitness level increased, p<0.05, in the IG compared to CG. The IG also significantly decreased energy intake, carbohydrates, fat, protein, and sodium by 33%, 28%, 26%, 25%, 56%, p<0.05 from baseline, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that modifiable risk factors for type 2 diabetes can be altered significantly by weight loss, regular exercise and modification of diet. The culturally-sensitive lifestyle intervention induced several beneficial changes in anthropometric measurements, physical activity, diet, cardiovascular fitness and fasting blood glucose significantly reducing diabetes risk factors.
