Le seigneur résidant, colonisateur et défricheur, a longtemps constitué une image d’Épinal de l’histoire de la Nouvelle-France. Si l’historiographie des dernières décennies a largement revisité la question seigneuriale, privilégiant l’étude des fiefs détenus par les ecclésiastiques au détriment des « familles seigneuriales », la présence des seigneurs sur leurs terres demeure une réalité méconnue. Première étape d’une étude portant sur la présence seigneuriale dans la vallée du Saint-Laurent, ce texte dresse l’état de cette présence, de l’implantation du système seigneurial, dans la décennie 1620, à son abolition, en 1854. Les « gentilshommes campagnards » constituent, dans la longue durée, une minorité parmi les seigneurs laurentiens, malgré une présence accrue au fil du temps et qui atteint son apogée (près de 40%) au milieu du xixe siècle. Au sein de ce sous-groupe seigneurial, largement composé de roturiers, parfois d’origine très modeste, plus rares encore sont les familles qui s’enracinent de manière durable et intergénérationnelle sur leur fief. Cette présence seigneuriale, pour être inhabituelle, ne représente pas moins un cadre d’interprétation permettant la compréhension de la diversité du monde rural et seigneurial laurentien.
