Abstract
Helléniste de formation, savant polyvalent, amateur d’histoire des religions, Charles Michel (1853-1930) a été l’un des maîtres de Franz Cumont à Gand. C’est aussi un chrétien convaincu, attentif aux débats provoqués par l’œuvre novatrice d’Alfred Loisy, dont il devient le correspondant. Sont ici présentées douze lettres inédites, envoyées entre 1902 et 1909 : Michel y exprime son soutien à Loisy dans les difficultés qui l’opposent aux autorités catholiques, tout en le félicitant de son élection au Collège de France. La question de la relance de la Revue d’histoire et de littérature religieuses est aussi au cœur de cet échange épistolaire : à cette occasion apparaît le nom de Cumont, pressenti comme futur collaborateur du périodique.
