A modified septic tank system to effectively manage agricultural wastewaters

Abstract
A septic tank and seepage bed system was modified in order to develop an effective purification system for milkhouse wastewater while also valorizing its nutrient and water value. This new system was design and is being tested over a twoyears period. The economic, agronomic and environmental aspects are being checked, based on the real needs of society andthe dairy producers. The cost of the system ($5 000$ to $6 500) is lower than that of other systems (at least $15 000) which arenot necessarily functional under Quebec condition. The system presented in this document is easy to operate, durable, ensuresthe valorization of water and allows for the safe purification of the wastewater. The work carried out last years characterized themilk house wastewater. The work in progress this year, monitors the efficiency of the system and measures its advantage forthe crop and the environment.
