Synthetic Strategies for Nonlinear Photonic Devices using β-BBO

Abstract
One of the most commercially important nonlinear materials is β-barium borate (β-BaB2O4; β-BBO) which as an inorganic salt, is challenging to pattern. In this work new synthetic methods are described which allow high quality thin film β-BBO to be made which are amenable to contact lithography. This has been accomplished by spin coating polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-modified metallo-organic solutions, followed by O2 plasma treatment and thermal backing. In addition, we have been able to reorient the BBO thin films by seeding the precursor gels with an organic molecule prior to thermal treatment. In both syntheses the films exhibit more efficient second harmonic generation than those made by literature schemes.
