Abstract
Les mormons fondamentalistes polygames font l’objet de nombreuses allégations de conduites contraires aux lois au Canada. Dans une recherche visant à étudier leurs réactions aux enquêtes menées par des agents de contrôle social, il est apparu que les vicissitudes de leur identité sociale jouaient un pôle important dans leurs stratégies de contact avec la société environnante. De plus, la décision de quitter leur groupe-mère à la suite de l’excommunication de leur leader, Winston Blackmore, a contribué à créer d’importantes pressions qui les ont conduits à une complète remise en question de leur identité sociale. L’analyse de données provenant d’entretiens avec des membres du groupe, d’échanges sur leur forum de discussion WEB et du journal de la communauté a permis d’identifier trois dimensions principales de ce questionnement identitaire. Ces dimensions se comprennent comme autant de questions existentielles concernant leur rapport à la société qui les entoure. Ces dimensions seront présentées, illustrées d’extraits d’entretiens et d’échanges WEB, et discutées, notamment en regard des écrits.
