Cette étude porte sur le rapport d’Antoine Vitez avec les notions de théâtre populaire et de théâtre service public. Elle met d’abord en évidence la difficulté historique qu’il y aurait à vouloir distinguer, dans la confluence des grands mouvements qui ont influencé le metteur en scène (théâtre populaire, théâtre politique, théâtre d’art), une filiation qui relèverait spécifiquement du lignage populaire. Puis elle propose une analyse du cheminement de la pensée d’Antoine Vitez sur la politique culturelle et le rôle social de l’artiste au cours des années déterminantes qui ont précédé la naissance du Théâtre de Quartier d’Ivry. Cet examen fait apparaître que son évolution des années 1970 procède moins d’une rupture idéologique profonde que d’une adaptation, dans la durée, aux contextes traversés et aux transformations du milieu du théâtre public. Elle s’intéresse ensuite à l’expression « élitaire pour tous » et montre que tenir compte du facteur temps permet de comprendre que cette invention langagière, plutôt que d’avoir valeur d’oxymore provocateur, et bien qu’elle en joue, traduit avec justesse le désir constant d’Antoine Vitez de concilier l’expérimental et le populaire. Elle souligne pour finir l’inscription de sa démarche dans une continuité historique qui fait notamment écho aux considérations hugoliennes sur l’existence d’une popularité qui ne s’acquiert et ne se mesure qu’au fil des siècles.
