Le concept de développement durable a émergé des revendications environnementales mais s’inscrit également dans le prolongement des débats sur le développement et la revendication d’une autre mondialisationbasée sur des modèles de développement alternatifs. Vu de cette manière, il peut sembler hors de propos d’aborder la question du développement durable dans le contexte des pays africains sous ajustement structurel depuis environ 25 ans. En effet, les politiques macro-économiques caractérisant ces programmes limitent la marge de manœuvre des États dans la définition des politiques. Cependant, le concept de développement durable a permis l’émergence d’un espace de communication sur la base de principes et valeurs telles que la responsabilité, la précaution et la participation, qui sont mobilisés par divers acteurs sociaux, favorisant ainsi l’expression de propositions alternatives jusqu’ici socialement inaudibles. L’industrie minière malienne expérimente ce potentiel de mobilisation du développement durable.
