Abstract
Résumé Dans le roman de Jacques Brault, l'agonie se conjugue à tous les temps, à travers divers textes: récit de la nuit, lectures du carnet et du poème. Le présent article étudie la façon dont se définit et s'ordonne le temps à l'intérieur de chacun de ces textes, les effets de perspective temporelle dus aux multiples anachronies narratives ainsi que l'ambiguïté des voix narratives où se jouent les dualités narrateur/personnage, auteur/lecteur. Les principales caractéristiques temporelles de l'agonie se dégagent de ce va-et-vient entre les textes: c'est un temps compté (temps écoulé/temps qui reste) qui ne prend sens que parce qu'il est raconté par le poème. Parallèlement, la nature de l'agonie se précisera par le passage d'une temporalité à l'autre, permettant de raccrocher le récit de l'agonie d'une vie d'homme à toute agonie.
