ABSTRACT A high gain circularly polarized millimeter‐wave x‐slot antenna with surface mounted horn is presented. Substrate integrated waveguide technology is adopted to achieve low profile feeding structure to excite the x‐shaped slot backed by a circular cavity. As a gain enhancing technique, a surface mounted horn, made from a very thin copper sheet is placed over the x‐slot to achieve a realized gain more than 15 dB. The proposed design exhibits an experimental bandwidth of 1.05 GHz. A very good agreement between the experimental and the simulated results is achieved. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
