Les élections partielles suscitent traditionnellement quantité de commentaires ou d'analyses. Le moment est peut-être opportun de s'interroger sur leur signification réelle. On a eu tendance par le passé à généraliser à outrance, à partir d'une demi-douzaine de cas récents. Un examen approfondi portant sur plusieurs décennies permettra de mieux évaluer le phénomène. En Grande-Bretagne, on dispose de travaux de ce type. Au Québec, malgré l'abondance relative d'études consacrées aux phénomènes électoraux, on s'est peu intéressé aux partielles dans une optique scientifique. Le présent article cherche donc à combler cette lacune en examinant les trois cent dix-neuf élections partielles tenues à l'Assemblée nationale du Québec depuis la Confédération jusqu'en 1976. Pour les fins d'une telle étude, les cent neuf années étudiées ont été découpées en quatre tranches chronologiques correspondant à des périodes bien distinctes de l'histoire politique du Québec. À la suite de cette revue historique, on tentera de dégager quelques grandes tendances. Une analyse des onze élections partielles tenues durant la 31e législature (1976-1981) permettra de constater l'émergence possible d'une nouvelle attitude de l'électorat lors de ce type de scrutins.
