新しく考案された乾式還元プロセスを持った水銀連続分析計で生じている反応をより明確にするために, 乾式還元部分である金属スズの表面をX線光電子分光分析により特性化した. まず, 金属スズの表面を塩化させる方法について検討した. 金属スズに600ppmの塩化水素ガスを2時間通過させるより, 1mol/lの塩酸に2時間浸漬させるほうがより深くまで金属スズ表面を塩化させることができることが分かった. 次に, 塩酸によりプレコートした金属スズを, 塩化第二水銀ガス及び水蒸気を含んだ空気にさらした場合の変化を確認した. 表面に生成された塩化第一スズは空気あるいは水蒸気により, 時間の経過とともに表面の塩素の割合が減少し, 主に酸化スズに変化した. 表面は酸化第二スズが, 深部は酸化第一スズが支配的であることが分かった. 分析結果から推定される表面での反応は, 実際の実験における物質収支から推定される反応と合致するものであった.
