Abstract
Le Canada ne connaît pas de laïcité constitutionnalisée, mais la jurisprudence a fortement établi les principes de séparation de l'État et des Églises et celui de la neutralité comme des éléments nécessaires au respect de l'égalité de tous les citoyens. Dans un pays qui a fait du multiculturalisme sa politique officielle, quelle conception de la laïcité se dégage d'une telle perspective politique et d'une telle orientation juridique? Comment l'État s'est-il graduellement affranchi des Églises? Ce sont là quelques aspects que nous traiterons, après avoir esquissé l'émergence historique des principes de laïcité au Canada.
