Abstract
Historiquement associées à la paysannerie, les nations autochtones du Mexique ont depuis longtemps dépassé le stade de la production agricole autosuffisante. Aujourd'hui, plusieurs coopératives ont pignon sur rue, offrant maints produits dont du « café bio », icône du commerce équitable de plus en plus estimé en Occident. Cet article vise à déterminer si la coopérative, en tant qu'élément central de l'économie sociale, est réellement la continuité d'une tradition ou représente un changement culturel chez les Autochtones du Mexique. Pour y répondre, nous examinerons en fonction de quoi se définissent et s'articulent les rapports sociaux chez les communautés autochtones mexicaines, selon les principales tendances anthropologiques. Afin d'avoir un portrait plus juste de la présence des coopératives dans ces communautés et de leur évolution à travers le temps, nous comparerons trois coopératives dans les États du Chiapas et de Puebla. Ainsi, notre analyse documentaire portera sur trente ans d'observations de terrain par les auteurs consultés.
