La dimension internationale des conflits ethniques a acquis récemment une place importante dans la littérature traitant des causes et de l’évolution de ce type de différends. Toutefois, un important stade dans l’évolution d’un conflit ethnique, sa diffusion régionale, est beaucoup moins étudié, probablement à cause de sa rareté. Malgré cela, quand un conflit ethnique déborde dans les États avoisinants, une instabilité généralisée à l’ensemble de la région devient très probable. Découvrir quels sont les facteurs « de risque » qui favorisent la diffusion des conflits ethniques est le principal objectif de cet article. Plusieurs variables telles que la contiguïté, l’affinité ethnique, les conflits passés, l’irrédentisme et le type de régime politique, sont évaluées afin de construire un indice de diffusion qui signale un potentiel de diffusion plus ou moins élevé. Par la suite, les résultats obtenus pour cet indice sont comparés à l’occurrence d’un processus de diffusion dans le cas de 75 conflits couvrant l’ensemble des régions du monde affectées par la violence ethnique.
