Abstract
L’analyse de contenu des communications officielles (lettres pastorales, mandements, etc.) des évêques québécois publiées entre 1850 et 1914 démontre que les évêques ajustent leur discours aux conditions sociales, culturelles et politiques de leur époque. Les thèmes, l’argumentation et le ton même du discours changent donc sensiblement. La presse est d’abord perçue surtout comme une menace à la foi et à l’Église catholique. À la fin du siècle, en revanche, les évêques la considèrent comme un instrument de développement social et culturel qu’il importe de garder conforme à la morale catholique. Au début du XX e siècle, au moment où la presse d’information se répand, des évêques vont encore plus loin et proposent même de doter l’Église d’un véritable réseau de journaux et publications catholiques.
