L'espace social de la ville peut être vu de façon dynamique si on le considère comme un système d'actions qui prévoient des transformations rapides du tissu social. Partant d'une recherche sur l'accession à la propriété à Montréal, nous en venons à penser que la stratification socio-économique de la population n'est plus le seul facteur à considérer dans les analyses de l'espace social. Certains aspects socioculturels doivent être invoqués pour rendre compte de la diversité des nouvelles clientèles qui régénèrent les villes centrales. La consommation de la «centralité» par les nouveaux ménages fortunés échappe à la seule logique de la ségrégation économique et sociale ; d'autres qui ne sont pas au sommet de la structure sociale partagent ce nouveau mode de l'«habiter» urbain. Ensemble, ils perpétuent la pluralité complexe à l'origine même de la définition de la ville.
