Abstract
Whether or not the twentieth century belonged to Canada, the past century should have more benign memories than some earlier ones, when war brought invasion, conquest, and devastation. The nineteenth century left Canada with a border and a durable solution to its eternal vulnerability. If the twentieth century involved Canada in war, it was Canada’s own decision, since Canadians had become, for a time, providers, not consumers, of security. That situation changed in the second half of the century, but national habits are not quickly changed.
