Abstract
Lawrence Cremin soutient que l’insatisfaction actuelle à l’égard de l’école est accentuée par une insuffisance d’ordre théorique. En centrant trop la réflexion sur les liens entre l’école et la société, la théorie de l’éducation de Dewey aboutit à amplifier outre mesure l’importance de l’école et à sous-estimer l’importance des autres institutions éducatives. Une théorie valable de l’éducation doit poser en principe l’existence d’une pluralité d’institutions éducatives et inciter à l’étude des relations que ces institutions entretiennent entre elles et avec la société dans son ensemble. Une telle réorientation théorique comporte des implications pour les politiques éducatives, qui doivent s’étendre à un vaste éventail d’institutions. La formation des enseignants doit se transformer pour tenir compte de la diversité des modes de fonctionnement des principales institutions éducatives.
