Abstract
Malgré une évolution récente qui va sans doute se poursuivre, il est évident que le découpage politique de l'Afrique indépendante reflète nettement son passé colonial. Le Sénégal est à ce sujet un cas intéressant. Certains semblent voir en ce pays le résultat d'un processus déjà amorcé avant l'ère coloniale et qui, depuis, s'est confirmé. Il est vrai que le rapprochement wolofo-sérer a précédé la colonisation effective de cette région, mais il ne faut pas oublier que le colonisateur y a exercé une forte influence et qu'il est difficile de dire ce qui serait advenu s'il n'était pas intervenu. L'histoire précoloniale de la Sénégambie n'est pas très bien connue et il est possible que la recherche en ce domaine donne un jour un éclairage nouveau. L'état actuel des connaissances incite, toutefois, à voir dans le Sénégal une création avant tout coloniale. La diversité originelle des populations et l'impact décisif du colonisateur semblent le confirmer.
