Abstract
André Vachon nous a quittés en 2003 après une vie consacrée à l'histoire et une riche carrière d'universitaire, d'archiviste, d'éditeur et d'administrateur. Ayant profité de ses conseils et recueilli ses confidences, Pierre Trépanier évoque ici l'érudit, l'humaniste et l'intellectuel qui ne confondait pas la critique avec le simple compte rendu ou la recension complaisante. Artisan du Dictionnaire biographique du Canada, André Vachon y a lui-même signé des articles qui demeurent des modèles historiographiques. Son Histoire du notariat, ses Ramas et plusieurs de ses collaborations aux Cahiers des Dix figurent aussi parmi ses meilleurs écrits. Fin connaisseur de la langue et maître-styliste, il était un remarquable écrivain, dont la prose concise et sobre rappelle, de façon personnelle, les classiques qu'il aimait tant. Au-delà de l'oeuvre, Pierre Trépanier nous fait découvrir l'ami, l'homme de foi et de convictions que fut André Vachon.
