Cet article s’intéresse au verset dans Les atmosphères afin de montrer que celui-ci fonde un procès d’échange générique alors inédit dans la littérature québécoise. L’examen successif des trois parties du recueil révèle que le verset est une forme labile qui permet à l’auteur d’affirmer le sens moderne de son entreprise. Grâce à l’alternance qu’il produit entre les silences des blancs et le souffle court de la parole, le verset dit en définitive le pouvoir poétique de la prose. Sur le plan formel et typographique, il installe une modernité esthétique qui permet au livre d’échapper à toute tentative de classification.
