Après avoir interdéfini structure, terme, relation et opération, l’auteur propose une fusion de trois typologies d’opérations transformationnelles : celle de Groupe µ, celle de Claude Zilberberg et celle de François Rastier. Ensuite, l’auteur caractérise, principalement à l’aide de sa métatypologie, certains aspects de son corpus d’analyse. Celui-ci est constitué de quelque 270 représentations iconographiques d’êtres fantastiques du bouddhisme tibétain (divinités mondaines ou éveillées, démons, animaux mythiques, monstres, etc.). Il appert notamment que le corpus privilégie l’adjonction (et l’augmentation), parfois flamboyante, et très souvent une forme particulière de celle-ci : la réduplication d’éléments déjà présents dans la forme originelle (par exemple, l’adjonction d’yeux, de bras ou de jambes). Cependant, certains êtres échappent à ces règles, par exemple le Kirtimukha, monstre dont il ne subsiste – suppression maximale et conservation minimale – que la tête. Cette prépondérance d’une sémiotique tonique (adjonctions et augmentations) plutôt qu’atone (suppressions et diminutions) contraste d’une certaine manière avec la notion de vacuité, au coeur du bouddhisme, et le caractère ineffable et, plus généralement, irreprésentable de la réalité ultime.
