Abstract
La base de données relationnelle permet, grâce à sa flexibilité, des manipulations fines qui préservent le caractère spécifique des données. Elle constitue, pour les historiens du social qui croient que les courbes et les tableaux statistiques n' expliquent pas tout, une alternative indispensable. Son degré d'efficacité, comme instrument de l'histoire, tient toutefois à la façon dont l'historien structure les données qui l'alimentent. Par là, l'utilisation de la base de données relationnelle exige une réflexion préalable très précise de la part du chercheur quant aux rapports qu'il établit entre ses sources, les problématiques qu'il tente de résoudre et sa propre vision de l'histoire. Cet article donne un exemple de ces rapports, à partir d'une base de données relationnelle mettant en oeuvre une série de contrats de mariage et de testaments du XVIe siècle.
