Abstract
Friedrich Ratzel construit une géographie politique qui se rattache à une philosophie de l'histoire hégélienne, laissant une grande place à l'organicisme. Sa théorie générale de l'expansion de l'État débouche sur une théorie de l'espace vital (Lebensraum) à laquelle il subordonne totalement la problématique coloniale. Cette démarche est le reflet direct de l'embarras d'une intelligentsia nationaliste allemande qui peine à trouver son chemin entre deux pôles. D'un côté la « grandeur occidentale », à laquelle la classe dominante allemande n'arrive pas à prendre entièrement part. De l'autre côté la « grandeur allemande », que la même classe dominante ne réussit pas à promouvoir dans le contexte de l'époque, où chaque impérialisme garde jalousement ses positions en tentant de les figer à tout prix.
