This special issue is respectfully dedicated to the memory of Lynne M. Angerer, who passed away on March 30, 2013 at the age of 68. Lynne was a remarkable scientist, an esteemed colleague, and a dear friend. Lynne worked with E. N. Moudrianakis at Johns Hopkins University and received her Ph. D. in 1973. She then did postdoctoral research with Dr. Norman Davidson at the California Institute of Technology. In 1978 she and her husband, Robert (Bob) Angerer, moved to the University of Rochester, where they worked for more than 25 years. In 2004, Bob and Lynne were recruited to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). At the time of her death, Lynne was a Senior Scientist in the Developmental Mechanisms Section of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) During her career, Lynne made seminal contributions to the field of developmental biology and assembled a legion of friends and colleagues along the way. She published almost 100 papers over five decades, and her research group was still publishing exciting new findings at the time of her death. Lynne is probably best known for her groundbreaking work with Bob in developing in situ hybridization as a means of analyzing temporal and spatial patterns of gene expression during embryogenesis. She also made major contributions to our understanding of early embryonic patterning and cell-cell interactions during development. Throughout her career, Lynne was fascinated by the regionalization of the early embryo and by the processes that result in the differential expression of genes in embryonic territories. She also played a leading role in the annotation of the Strongylocentrotus purpuratus genome and in the development of genomics-based tools for the biological community. Lynne had a strong sense of scientific collegiality. This collegiality, coupled with Lynne's powerful intellect, made her a popular reviewer of presentations, papers, and grants. She became famous for her rigorous, insightful, yet constructive critiques. Lynne also placed great value on scientific mentoring. She trained young scientists throughout her career, recognizing the strengths of each trainee, treating each one differently, yet holding them all to the same high standards. Two years ago, Lynne traveled to one of our institutions to serve as the external member of a thesis committee. In this case, the thesis defense happened to fall on Lynne's birthday. When asked if she wouldn't rather be off somewhere celebrating, Lynne's response was: “What better way to spend my birthday?” Many of Lynne's colleagues remained in close contact with her, mostly by email, during her illness. Her messages were full of optimism (tinged with realism), a determination to return to her research, a remarkable scientific curiosity about the disease that was weakening her and the treatments that were being used to fight it, a desire not to leave any commitments to her colleagues unfulfilled, and, above all else, love and concern for her family. It is appropriate to dedicate this special issue on sea urchin development to Lynne M. Angerer, who was a leader in our research community and a friend to so many of us. We were fortunate to benefit from her intellect, candor, fairness, judgment, and her passion for science. We feel certain that no one would have enjoyed reading these papers more than Lynne.
