Vu le manque de mesures in situ, il est difficile d'estimer le volume d'eau stocké sous forme de neige sur le Mont Liban et encore plus de prévoir avec quelle rapidité ce volume d'eau sera disponible. C'est là que la télédétection peut aider la modélisation hydrologique. Ainsi, il serait possible de mettre à jour la distribution spatiale de l'équivalent en eau de la neige sèche à partir d'images RADARSAT-1. L'approche a été testée à l'hiver 2001. Les résultats obtenus portent à croire que l'algorithme serait susceptible de s'appliquer au couvert neigeux méditerranéen. Toutefois, une certaine prudence s'impose car le nombre de sites de mesures était limité. Durant la période de fonte et par temps clair, les données des capteurs opérant dans la partie réfléchie du spectre, comme le capteur VEGETATION, peuvent être utilisées pour suivre la limite inférieure du couvert de neige en montagne. L'étendue de la couverture de neige simulée par un modèle hydrologique, comme HYDROTEL, peut alors être validée et mise à jour. L'intégration des données de télédétection dans la modélisation pourrait donc permettre de suivre la quantité de neige au sol. Toutefois, l'ajout de stations météorologiques automatiques bien instrumentées, semble nécessaire.
