Abstract
La partie moyenne de la Loire, au cœur de la France, bien reliée à Paris par la route d’Orléans, constitue un axe de transport majeur, mais les conditions de navigation sont délicates. En été, le débit très irrégulier transforme la Loire en un fleuve de sable. Les techniques de navigation, l’entretien et l’aménagement du fleuve, la réglementation d’un espace partagé n’ont pu enrayer le déclin de la marine de la Loire après 1850. Un déclin causé par l’amélioration des routes et l’extension du réseau ferroviaire. La réflexion autour de la voie d’eau et de son avenir est parsemée de nombreux débats et conflits.
