The preparation of Si1-xGex alloy nanocrystals via the simultaneous thermally induced disproportionation of hydrogen silsesquioxane and germanium diiodide is reported. The presented method affords oxide encapsulated nanocrystals that are readily liberated upon hydrofluoric acid etching to yield freestanding hydride surface terminated nanocrystals.
